Although the leaves are beginning to turn on the trees the South of England has been enjoying some rather warm weather. On Monday most monitor farms experienced mild heat stress and afternoons on many days were warm. Impact on milk yield will have been small but behaviours will have been altered with more standing and ‘clustering’ as cows cope with the warmer afternoons. This can be detrimental to hoof health. Running fans etc. during these hotter periods will be beneficial – keep running them until the unwanted behaviours stop.
As we are now into October this will be the last weekly post for this year. In the coming weeks we will summerise the heat stress situation over the summer. Once we have discussed the results with the monitor farms I will post them here.
