The weather forecasters were right and we have had a good week of ‘summer’ weather. Conditions have varied across the country with the south seeming to enjoy hotter, sunnier days. Grass growth has been excellent and many are reporting a grazing glut and are making late cuts of silage. A hot day with strong sunshine can trigger high levels of heat stress especially in the afternoon and shade needs to be supplied in these conditions. Predicted maximal (full sun) milk yield losses range up to 2-3 l/cow/day.
