Whilst the past week’s weather has been ‘pleasant’ by British standards there has been considerable local, and North-South, variation in heat stress risks. Many of the more southern farms were warm and sunny on Wednesday with moderate heat stress risk during the day. In Wiltshire the mid-afternoon Black_Globe temperature was as high as 37’C in the full sun. This would have been very uncomfortable for the cows being so close to their own body temperature. Shade from hedgerow trees or inside buildings will have helped considerably.
